Appel is the author of eight books, including the essay collection, Phoning Home, and the novel, The Biology of Luck. Dr. Appel\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s research interest focuses on bioethics, law & medicine, and the nexus between law and psychiatry.

    Laura Erickson-Schroth, M.D.
    Assistant Professor, Attending Psychiatrist, Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP)
    Laura Erickson-Schroth, MD, MA is a psychiatrist working in the Mount Sinai Beth Israel CPEP and at Hetrick-Martin Institute. She is the editor of Trans Bodies, Trans Selves, a resource guide written by and for transgender people. She is also a board member of the New York County Psychiatric Society and the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists, and a former board member of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality. She has appeared on NPR (Fresh Air and On Point), and was named to the OUT Magazine OUT 100 list in 2014. Laura graduated from Dartmouth Medical School, New York University Psychiatry Residency, Columbia University Public Psychiatry Fellowship, and Mount Sinai Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship.

    Aaron Patterson, M.D.
    Attending Psychiatrist, Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program
    Dr. Aaron Patterson is a board certified psychiatrist who specializes in psychopharmacology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. He works to integrate multiple treatment modalities into the care of his patients, such as diet modification, sleep hygiene techniques, therapeutic interventions, and medications when appropriate. In addition to his work through the faculty practice in psychiatry, Dr. Patterson serves as the Director of Medical Informatics & as an Inpatient Attending Psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center. He is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine, a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. His research focuses on quality improvement and medical informatics.

    Dr. Rainey completed her residency in Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, where she served as Co-Chief Resident during her final year. She graduated from University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where she was an Osler Scholar and nominated for the Gold-Headed Cane Award. She completed her undergradate degree at Texas A&M University, where she was competed for their cross country and track-and-field team.

    Arnold Winston, M.D.

    Dr. Winston came to Beth Israel Medical Center in 1978 after serving as the director of the South Beach Psychiatric Center of Staten Island and Brooklyn. He has made major contributions to the practice of psychotherapy and has written several books and authored many peer-reviewed articles on psychotherapy. In addition to his clinical, research and teaching activities, Dr. Winston brings administrative vigor, flexibility and a broad educational vision to the department.
